Magical Mushrooms

Welcome Summer! It is always refreshing to have a few weeks away in Maine, one of my favourite places. I always arrived completely exhausted and within days I feel that I have refreshed my cup of creativity.

We had a glorious walk in Wolfe’s Neck State Park this week where the children helped me spot so many interesting mushrooms providing me with fresh inspiration. We were all excited by the variety of colours and textures as well as the different way that they grew - sometimes high on trees and other times poking up in the leaf litter.

This summer time research in the woods will provide me with vital inspiration this Autumn when I will continue to create new ceramic vessels for my conceptional project We Shall Inherit the Earth. Inspired by Suzanne Simard’s seminal research on mycorrhizal networks connecting trees within forests, this installation will be composed of a grove of interdependent ceramic vessels unified by the mushrooms on each form. The title is taken from Sylvia Plath’s Mushrooms and this project explores sisterhood and the strength of community. More on the development of this project throughout the course of this Autumn!
