Shallow Bird Serving Dish

£50.00

If you make your food with love, serve it in a bowl made with love. This handmade moulded bowl is perfectly imperfect for serving any special meal.

Soaring, diving and gliding around the bowl, these birds echo the cut outs and line drawings of Matisse and Braque. Each bird design is cut out from a piece of paper and applied onto the thrown clay surface. Layers of light blue and dark blue slip are applied in order to give the piece a textural painterly depth to the surface.  Once all of the nuanced layers of slip are painted on, the paper cut outs are removed to reveal the colour of the shapes underneath.

Moulded stoneware with layers of slip and finished with a glossy glaze, 2023

Dimensions: 4cm (1.5") height x 26cm (10.25") diameter

Each work is completely unique due to the painterly process. Any irregularities in the work are due to the making and firing process and are part of the hand-made quality of the piece.

Living in the countryside, we have fallen in love with bird watching over the years.  The Bernwood Forest is home to so many song birds, owls and raptors and we keep a tally of all of our sightings.  We are also near Otmoor and every autumn we are lucky to witness the dancing murmurations of the starlings overhead. But best of all was the plucky barn swallows who used to fly into the studio over the summer and keep my company while I was working on pieces.  Birds are a joy to watch and I cannot help but use them as motifs in my work.
