Small Etched Expressionistic Bowl
Whoever renders directly and authentically that which impels him to create is one of us. Ernst Kirchner - Die Brücke manifesto
Taking inspiration from German Expressionist woodcuts of the 1920’s, this bowl captures the essence of gestural texture creating a stylised but graphic design effect. The markings are all carved by hand producing a simple dynamic composition hewn directly from the clay, reminiscent of the Expressionists carving directly into the wood with their mark making. After the first firing, the texture is highlighted with an underglaze in order to emphasise the irregular texture and raw energy of the carving creating a bold but stylised effect. The interior of the bowl is finished with a satin charcoal glaze while the exterior is unglazed providing a textural and visual juxtaposition between the inner and outer domain of the piece. Though a seemingly simple work, this is a piece for an art lover who values the subtle touch of an artist’s hand and brings a subtle energy into any interior space.
Thrown and carved stoneware with underglaze and glaze. 2024
Dimensions: 7cm (2 3/4") x 11cm (4 1/4")
Each work is completely unique due to the gestural carving process. The interior glaze does allow the vase to hold water and is fit for purpose. Any irregularities in the work are due to the making and firing process and are part of the hand-made quality of the piece.
